Louis Gossett, Jr. is the star of Y2K (aka Terminal Countdown) and he does a very credible job, as usual. One glaring issue is that his military camouflage fatigues look gigantic on him. Watching him waddle around in an outfit that looks like it is about three sizes too large is distracting sometimes. Jaimz Woolvett plays the Computer Geek, and he seems to be mugging for the camera in the early scenes. After the ambush Woolvett’s character takes it to a more serious level. Woolvett is very good in Y2K.

Sarah Chalke plays the role of the Russian Agent, and until she appeared in this film it was not jelling. She is the spice that makes Y2K sizzle. Ed O’Ross is here as the assistant to Louis Gossett’ Jr.’s character. O’Ross usually plays evil characters. Not surprisingly, it later turns out that O’Ross betrayed his team. O’Ross and his squad of traitors are all victims of chemical warfare inflicted by Saddam Hussein during the 1991 Gulf War. They want the U.S. Government to put major resources into medical research because they are all dying.

At some point a Columbian Drug Lord and his private army enters the fray. The Drug Lord is played by Ismael Carlo, who does a convincing turn as an immoral and unethical slime ball. Considering how ruthless the Drug Lord’s soldiers are, their role as heroes later in the movie is a bit of a letdown. Talk about a mixed message!

The movie has some more twists, and while it is a low-budget movie, all of the cast members give a sincere effort and Y2K delivers some action, some suspense, and it is interesting and pretty good. Malcolm McDowell is in this film too in a very small role. Y2K has a lot of good moments.
